Pilot Killed in Cessna Citation Crash Near Mesquite Metro Airport

Mesquite, Texas — A Cessna 525A Citation CJ2+ jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Mesquite Metro Airport on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of the sole pilot on board.

The aircraft departed runway 18 at approximately 7:33 a.m. local time. After lifting off, it executed a right turn and climbed to about 950 feet before entering a rapid descent. The final recorded data indicated a groundspeed of 196 knots with a descent rate of 2,750 feet per minute.

The crash occurred in a wooded area near East Cartwright and Lawson roads, about a mile from the airport. Emergency responders extinguished small fires at the scene. No structures were damaged, and there were no other injuries reported. 

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. 

Weather conditions at the time were clear with 10 miles visibility and light winds from the south.

The pilot's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
