Japan Airlines Flight Experiences Tire Puncture During Landing at Kagoshima Airport

Kagoshima, Japan — A Japan Airlines (JAL) Boeing 737-846(WL), registered JA336J, experienced a tire puncture on the right main landing gear during landing at Kagoshima Airport (KOJ/RJFK) on Saturday, November 30, 2024. The incident occurred during flight JL647, a scheduled passenger service from Tokyo-Haneda Airport (HND/RJTT) to Kagoshima.

The aircraft, carrying 150 occupants, landed on runway 34 at approximately 13:44 local time when the right tire of the main landing gear punctured. Witnesses reported seeing white smoke emanating from the damaged tire. Despite the issue, the flight crew safely taxied the aircraft to the apron under its own power, where it was met by Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFF). No fire was observed, and there were no injuries among passengers or crew.

Following the incident, the Boeing 737 was towed to its assigned gate for further inspection. Runway 34 was temporarily closed until 13:59 for safety checks, causing minor disruptions, including the delay of three commercial flights.

The aircraft sustained minor damage, and operations resumed shortly after the runway inspection. Authorities are investigating the cause of the tire failure, though initial reports suggest no significant mechanical issues.

Japan Airlines issued a statement thanking passengers for their patience and cooperation during the incident. The airline confirmed that all 150 occupants were unharmed and that passenger safety remains its top priority.
