Lancaster, California - September 22, 2024
Nanchang CJ-6A |
At approximately 12:50 PM local time, a tragic mid-air collision occurred involving two vintage aircraft, a Yakovlev Yak-52 and a Nanchang CJ-6A, during a formation flight near Lancaster, California.
The accident resulted in the death of the pilot flying the Nanchang CJ-6A, identified by its registration number N313YK.
The Yak-52, registered as N5287, managed to execute an emergency landing on a road. The pilot of the Yak-52 escaped unharmed but appeared visibly shaken. Witnesses described him as distressed, with one saying, "He said he was alright, but he said it was terrible." Fortunately, the pilot is cooperating fully with investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), who are leading the inquiry into the incident.
The Nanchang CJ-6A, manufactured in 1964, entered a spin after the collision and crashed into terrain. The pilot was the sole occupant and was tragically killed on impact. The collision occurred in a relatively remote area near Lancaster, sparing any casualties or significant damage on the ground. One witness remarked, "If it was over the city of L.A. or something, there would have been a lot of people. It was a blessing actually in disguise that it happened over here."
Emergency services, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department, responded swiftly to the crash. The Yak-52 crash-landed at 47th Street and Avenue F, while the Nanchang CJ-6A impacted near Avenue G and 60th Street.
Both aircraft, known for their popularity in aerobatic and warbird flying communities, were part of a private event. The Nanchang CJ-6A, owned by CRA Travel LLC, sustained substantial damage, with the wreckage being recovered for investigation.
The NTSB has yet to release an official report, and initial details have been obtained through news and social media sources. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
